2020 RACE REPORTS

WEEK ENDING 1ST MAR 2020

Saturday 29th Feb

Saturday saw the first ever Leap Day Parkrun. There won’t be another until 29 Feb 2048 so save the date 🤣 I wonder how many of us will still be running in 28 years time!?
Angela Gibbons and Barry McAuley were in action at Ballymena’s Parkrun at the Ecos Centre joining 246 others. Barry was first home for the club in 21:14 followed by Angela in 33:42.

The Montgomery family ran Larne Parkrun together in bright but brisk conditions. Well done Jude, Noah, Mum and Dad.

WEEK ENDING 1ST MAR 2020

Sunday 1st Mar
East Coast Athletic Club kindly invited Stephen, Kirsten, Wayne, Gary and Eamonn along to compete in the 8th race of their Club Championship on Sunday. The 10mile race started at the Chaine Memorial, taking in Bay Road, Curran Road and Glenarm Road before heading north along the Coast road to Ballygally where the runners turned for home, finishing on the Promenade at the back of Larne Leisure Centre. Conditions were made difficult with some strong headwinds but despite this our guys ran really well, showing real promise ahead of the Larne Half Marathon and the London Marathon in April (next month!?!). First home for the club was Wayne in 2nd place, followed by Stephen in 3rd, Gary in 4th, Eamonn in 6th and Kirsten who was 2nd lady home.

Huge thanks to East Coast AC for inviting us along, and to all the volunteers, we really enjoyed it. 👍

WEEK ENDING 23RD FEB 2020

Saturday 22nd Feb
The last race in the Belfast Telegraph Run Forest Run Series took place in Castlewellan, Co Down.
Hundreds of runners took part in the 5K and 10k races which started and finished in the shadow of the majestic lakeside castle. Runners, who braved the wind and rain, enjoyed fantastic views of the Mourne Mountains and the world’s largest permanent Maze.
214 runners took part in the 5K
Kirsten 22nd overall 23.01 (5th female)
Joanne 39th overall 25.39 (11th female)

Excellent running from both Kirsten and Joanne in what looked like pretty awful conditions! Well done and congrats on completing the full Born2Run forest series, keeping the flag flying for GRC throughout. 💛💙💚

WEEK ENDING 23RD FEB 2020

Saturday 22nd Feb

Elsewhere the club had another big turnout at Larne Parkrun on Saturday with 13 members taking part. First home for the club was Gary Montgomery in first place in 17m55s. Barry, Gary, Eamonn, Stephen and Michael locked out positions 4-8 with Eamonn and Michael smashing their previous course PBs. Wayne who with Stephen incorporated the Parkrun as part of their Saturday training was 11th, followed home by Lorraine who was second female overall and Daniel who matched his course PB. Kenneth was next home coming within a few secs of his course PB, followed by Kerry and Stacey, 4th and 6th females overall followed by Angela, matching her previous time from early Jan. Well done everyone, great running in those conditions.

Finally, training for Antrim Coast Half Marathon continues despite the wind, rain and snow. Excellent consistency from everyone midweek and getting the long runs in at the weekend. Well done and keep it up everyone!

WEEK ENDING 16TH FEB 2020

Saturday 16th Feb
Not much racing this weekend but Gary Montgomery ensured a GRC name remained at the top of the Larne Parkrun results page with another sub 19min effort.

Loads of runners were out smashing their long runs this weekend despite the poor conditions. Brilliant to see so many people putting in the hard yards on such a consistent basis! Well done everyone!

WEEK ENDING 9TH FEB 2020

Saturday 8th Feb

With GRC's Cross Country event being postponed due to poor weather, a number of members took the opportunity to take part in the weekly Larne Parkrun.

Gary Montgomery, Barry McAuley and Stephen Montgomery made it an all GRC top 3 with Barry setting a new course PB of 19:30. Gary Patterson was next home in 5th, followed by Michael Watterson in a new course PB of 21:35. Next home was Daniel McNiell in another course PB followed by Kerry Inglis and Kirsten Montgomery, running with Noah.

A big thank you to all the volunteers at Larne parkrun who do a great job, often in bad conditions without much thanks! If you have an hour to spare on a Saturday morning please consider volunteering by sending them a quick Facebook message.

Sunday 9th Feb

East Coast Athletic Club kindly invited Stephen along to compete in their Club Championship 10k race on Sunday. Despite Storm Ciara trying her best to disrupt the runners, there was some great running on show. Stephen came home second in a fantastic time of 39m14s. Thanks to East Coast AC for asking Stephen along.

WEEK ENDING 2ND FEB 2020

Sat 1st Feb - Born2Run Antrim Gardens

On Saturday 1st Feb six Glenlough Running Club members traveled to Antrim Castle Gardens 5K/10K, this was the 7th race in the Belfast Telegraph Run Forest Run Series.

Hundreds of runners took part in the 5K and 10k races which started in the grounds of the gardens, the 10K route took in the ruins of Shanes Castle (a Game of Thrones venue) where runners enjoyed fantastic views of Lough Neagh and then returned through the immaculately kept gardens and wood at Castle Gardens.

The 5K race mainly took place in the gardens with a small section on the Main Road.

WEEK ENDING 2ND FEB 2020

Sat 1st Feb - WeRunWildNI Midnight Half Marathon

At midnight (yes midnight!) on Saturday 1st Feb Rossi Kelly was amongst 170 other "nutjobs" standing at Carrick castle about to take on a midnight Trail half marathon. Hills, more hills, forests, country lanes, muck puddles & more muck but all in all a fantastic 13.1 mile in the legs. Running is not always about what pace/speed you run at or how long it takes you to finish a course, for Rossi its all about enjoyment & exploring the basics of running while pushing your mental & physical fitness abilities.

Well done Rossi!

Sat 1st Feb - Larne Parkrun

Rounding off our competing members this week was Eamonn MatthewsDaniel Mc Neill and Gary Patterson, running the Larne Parkrun for the second time in 3 weeks.

Congrats to Dan and Eamonn who both chalked up impressive course PBs.

First home for the club in 20:34 was Gary, taking 45s off his time from 3wks ago. Next home was Eamonn in 21:19 (CPB) taking 10s off his time. Most improved though was Dan coming home in 26:16 (CPB), nearly 2mins faster than his time 3 weeks ago! Brilliant Dan.

Super stuff lads, well done. The proof is in the pudding as they say, and the hard work is paying off handsomely.

WEEK ENDING 26TH JAN 2020

Sat 25th Jan - Larne Parkrun

A number of members attended the Larne Parkrun with Barry McAuley and Stephen Montgomery volunteering, thanks gents!

First home for the club in another course PB (!) was Michael Watterson in a great time of 21:51. Next home for the club was Kirsten Montgomery, again setting a course PB with a time of 24:31. 3rd home was Jude Montgomery in a highly respectable 32:41 (look out mum and dad!). Great running on a tough course right on our doorstep, well done!

Sat 25th Jan - Dungiven 10k

Gary Patterson set a 10k PB and took his first podium in a 5k/10k in Dungiven. The charity race for Friends of the Cancer Centre has now run annually for 7 years and is well supported. Gary finished the race in a time of 39:35 which was good enough for 4th overall, and 3rd male.

WEEK ENDING 19TH JAN 2020

Sat 18th Jan - Born2Run Gosford

Well done to members Barry McAuley, Kirsten Montgomery and Joanne McLarnon who made the journey to Gosford Forest Park on Saturday 18th January to take part in the Born2Run 5k event. Kirsten and Joanne showed real signs of the winter training paying off with fantastic times of 22:45 and 23:46 respectively, good enough for 29th and 36th overall in a field of over 200! Barry continued his fine form and bagged himself another podium with a time of 17:32! Brilliant running, well done guys!
